V. -^sHippocrattes Teaching in hydraulic transients is often highly involved, and for many understanding steady state hydraulics is enough of a challenge. This creates a dangerous environment in which experienced hydraulic engineers take a "black box" approach to controlling pressure transients. This can lead to some very unfortunate results. This paper examines some technological solutions that have been developed in the industry and are often assumed to be "black box" solutions. The paper discusses the potential for these devices to make the hydraulic transient situation worse. The purpose of the paper is to emphasise that a good understanding of the physics of transients is essential to the safe design of hydraulic systems and also to highlight some pitfalls in a few widely used technologies.
