Evaluation of the Buckling Critical Load of Bars Subjected to their Self-Weight

The consideration of the self-weight has not been considered by initial formulations for calculating buckling critical load. This problem has been discussed by Euler and was definitely solved by Greenhill in 1881. The most modern calculation procedures do linear matrix analysis and offer solutions that can be easily implemented in the Finite Element (FE) environment. The stiffness matrix of structures subjected to axial loads is different from the conventional stiffness matrix. This implies in introducing peculiar aspects from nonlinear analyses. This work evaluates the aforementioned solutions for the analysis of stability of bars exclusively subjected to their self-weight.
