This contribution first gives an overview of the wide-angle parabolic equation (PE) technique for solving non-separable wave propagation problems in the ocean and atmospheric science areas. The principles are described and applications in these areas are briefly discussed. Recent advances made by the authors in applying the PE technique to the obstacle scattering problem, specifically the so-called on-surface radiation condition approach [Kriegsmann et al. IEEE Trans. Antennas Propagat. 1987], are then discussed.
