The procedure for migration of firing points in a seismic survey includes transmission of the seismic waves from a source displaced over the surface of the earth, and recording the traces of the reflected seismic waves for each of the positions of the source. The firing points are migrated by means of a paraxial wave propagation equation, implemented by using a rational polynomial of this equation. The digital coefficients of the equation are optimised such that the radial error between the ideal wave equation and the approximation is minimal during a given interval. This interval is determined by an equation involving the vector component of the wave in the horizontal axis, the angular frequency, and the propagation speed. USE/ADVANTAGE - Formation of seismic image. Optimises coefficients of equation to limit error to reasonable value while reducing cost of time consuming calculations.
