A computer code BEMAP is used to calculate the sound radiated by vibrating structures. The inputs to BEMAP are either modal vibration data or forced response data. The input data may come from a finite element structural model, from experimental modal analysis tests or from vibration measurements made during actual operation. BEMAP uses this input data along with the geometry of the vibrating structure to calculate the sound field in the near and far field of the structure. The sound intensity on the surface of the structure is also calculated, along with the sound power and the sound radiation efficiency of the structure. By using BEMAP, an engineer may use vibration data to design quieter products. An example application is given in which we calculate the sound radiated by the first bending mode of a prototype engine block.
