The TravelSmart Household Program is part of an integrated approach to managing travel demand in Perth. It is a voluntary travel behaviour change approach that focuses on reducing Perth's car dependence by influencing individual's perceptions, knowledge and attitudes to using the travel alternatives such as walking, cycling and public transport. The TravelSmart Household program was developed in Perth Western Australia and has been offered to 156,000 residents to date. The approach has been widely recognised as both effective and successful and is now being replicated in the UK, USA and Europe. This paper presents the methodology, results and outcomes of the Household program focusing on how it provides individualised information to help people use the bus network, the role of private bus operators and how it can contribute to increases in bus patronage.
