Onset, maintenance and retreat of Asian summer monsoon were analyzed by use of various climatological charts in the Atlas, and some valuable results were obtained. The main results are briefly described below. (1) Definition of monsoon is set up (equation 1). The real wind can be considered to consist of the monsoon wind and the stationary planetary wind. As the first approximation, the multi-yearly annual mean wind can be used to represent the stationary planetary wind, thus the monsoon wind can be obtained by the abstraction of the stationary planetary wind from the real wind. Thus-defined monsoon has not only the clearly physical image but also the quantified data that are convenient for the computation and division of monsoon region as well as the analysis of temporal and spatial variations of monsoon.
