A Primary Study on the Wave Essence of Monsoon

In this paper, based on the NCEP/NCAR (1958-1999) reanalysis data and with the viewpoint of wave, some studies on the monsoon are carried out, with which the essence of monsoon is tried to be discovered. The study shows that the spatial structure of abnormal zonal wind at 850hPa can be expressed in different wave patterns. Zonal wave with wave number 1 occupies the global tropics, while the mid-high latitude is dominated by the zonal wave of wave number 3. Further study with complex EOF analysis shows that, such abnormal zonal wind can be resolved into many typical wave patterns, but the primary several ones are respectively corresponding to certain physical factors. The establishment of monsoon is exact the interaction between these factors.
