A Study of a Virtual-Reality-Based Real-Time Container Terminal Operation Management System

The information from container operation management systems (COMS) was conventionally conducted using traditional numerical and diagrammatical formats. Thus for increasing complication of today's container terminal activities, the operation information is generated so variously and abundantly that it is quite difficult to be handled in a real-time manner. Further studied, there still exist such impacts as inefficient system response and control due to the abstract inherence of data produced. As a result, it is an imperative to employ the latest information technologies (ITs) to resolve these impacts so as to enhance the operation efficiency of container terminals. Accordingly, a virtual-reality-based (VR-based) strategy, which paves a new venue for container terminal operation and control, is proposed and investigated. A case study on Tianjing Container Port in China is consequently presented to illustrate this approach. It is indicated that the proposed VR-based system can be effectively applied for container terminal operation.
