In this paper, the modal filter concept is introduced for structural vibration analysis and control. The modal filter is a tool to extract the modal coordinates of each individual mode from the system outputs by mapping the response vector from the physical space to the modal space. This concept was used originally to deal with the spillover problem in the control of distributed-parameter systems and it is extended, in this paper, to other applications such as active vibration control, correlation between analytical and experimental models and vibration source identification. A practical method is proposed to construct the discrete modal filters based on modal test data.
