Acidic air pollutants and PM_(2.5) were measured to investigate their characteristics in downtown Seoul,South Korea.These measurements were made during the four seasons,from April 2001 until February 2002,using the Annular Denuder System.The annual mean concentrations of gas phase pollutants,HNO_3,HNO_2,SO_2,and NH_3,were 1.22,5.54,7.33,and 4.42 ?/m~3,respectively.The annual mean concentrations of particulate phase pollutants,PM_(2.5),NO_3~-,SO_4~(2-),and NH_4~+,were 49.6,7.78,6.42,3.30 ?/m~3,respectively.Gas and particulate phase species of the study showed seasonal variation from the statistical analysis of variance and showed significant characteristics from the correlation analysis.From the Pearson correlation coefficients,the PM_(2.5) mass represented higher correlations with some chemical species such as HNO_2(r=0.86),NO_3~-(r=0.93),SO_4~(2-)(r=0.85),and NH_4~+(r=0.95).The NH_4~+ concentrations represented higher correlations with NO_3~-(r=0.96)and SO_4~(2-)(r=0.91)among the chemical species measured in this study.In addition,the results of this study were compared with the results of the previous study made at the same site by the same method,from October 1996 to September 1997.HNO_3,HNO_2,NH_3,and NO_3~-concentrations of this study were higher than those of the previous study,whereas SO_2 concentration was even lower than that of the previous study,probably because of the change of fuel pattern used in the city.
