Water-based paints contain several organic compounds. Painters and other workers may be exposed to elevated concentrations of these compounds while applying paint inside buildings. Two of the major organic compounds found in water-based latex paint are ethylene glycol (EG) and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate (TMPD-MIB). There are little published data related to exposure to these compounds during the application of latex paint. In this study we determined personal exposure concentrations and background concentrations (middle of chamber) for EG and TMPD-MIB for the application of two interior paints, Behr Premium Plus Satin Enamel No. 7050 Ultra Pure White (Satin Enamel), and Behr Premium Plus Interior Flat 1300 Deep Base (Flat Base). The EG and TMPD-MIB concentrations measured for these paint formulations were 5.5%, and 0.79% and 2.6% and 0.11% by weight for the Satin Enamel and Flat Base, respectively. Each of the paints was applied in three separate painting events completed in an 11 m~3 environmental chamber fitted with 15.75 m~2 of nominal ? inch gypsum wallboard. The chamber air exchange rate was approximately 0.9 hr-1 for all experiments. The EG concentration observed in the breathing space of the painter increased only slightly, from 0.73 mg/m~3 to 0.85 mg/m~3 for an increase of 250% in the mass of EG applied to gypsum board. The observed TMPD-MIB concentration, however, increased more that 400% when comparing the results for the Satin Enamel and Flat Base, respectively.
