Branch retinal vein occlusion (BVO) is three times as common as central retinal vein occlusion (CVO) and second only to diabetic retinopathy as the most common retinal vascular cause of visual loss.1 Cardiovascular disease and systemic hypertension increases the risk of developing a BVO. Patients with glaucoma, increased body mass index at 20 years of age, high serum levels of alpha-2-globulin,2 and shorter axial lengths3 are also at increased risk. The condition is usually unilateral, with only 9% of patients developing bilateral venous occlusive disease.
