A drawback of classical Ziegler-Natta and metallocene catalysts is the extremely high oxophilicity of the early-transition metal center. This oxophilicity renders metallocenes inactive toward most functionalized monomers and highly sensitive to polar solvents and impurities. Over the past several years, to overcome the sensitivity of metallocenes to polar substituents, new, highly active olefin polymerization catalysts of late-transition metals have been developed.
