Bidentate organophosphorus ligands (I) comprising a trivalent phosphine group and another trivalent phosphorus group are new. Bidentate organophosphorus ligands of formula (I) are new. R1R2P-Z-CHR3-X-P(YR4)(YR5) (I) R1-R5 = 1-20C alkyl, alkenyl, haloalkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl, aralkyl or heteroaryl, all optionally substituted by 1-20C alkyl, alkenyl, haloalkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, heteroaryl, alkoxy, halogen, NO2, OH, oxo, thio, thiolato, NH2, substituted amino, CN, sulfonato and/or trialkylsilyl, where two of the substituents can be linked together, and where R1 and R2 or R4 and R5 can be linked together; X = O, S or NR6; Y = a direct bond, O or NR7; R6, R7 = H or groups as defined for R1-R5; Z = two single- or double-bonded C atoms that form part of a N-, O- or S-containing aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, olefinic or cyclo-olefinic system or an aromatic or heteroaromatic ring system, optionally substituted as for R1-R5 and/or substituted by alkoxy, acyl, halogen, NO2, OH, oxo, thio, thiolato, NH2, substituted amino, CN, sulfonato, phosphonato and/or trialkylsilyl.
