United States Domestic Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (DRVSM) Program: An Update on Progress and Plans

Coordination is underway within the aviation community to ensure that the target implementation date is met. Controllers who participated in the simulation indicated strong support for DRVSM at FL 290 to 410 (inclusive). The simulations provided a better understanding of the issues involved in implementing DRVSM, and have led to changes in both the training plan and proposed procedures. Work is ongoing to develop training plan templates, National Cadre training instruction, traffic management flow plans, and test and implementation plans and procedures for the seamless integration of DRVSM within the National Airspace System. Concurrently, the Flight Standards Service is updating guidance materials and handbooks, standardizing processes and procedures, clarifying issues unique to general aviation operators, and improving education and field support at its field offices. A safety assessment is planned in July 2004 and an operational readiness assessment decision in September 2004. As these activities indicate, the FAA is fully committed to the successful implementation of DRVSM in January 2005.
