Tumor therapy frequently results in tumor cell apoptosis and for some tumors a correlation has been demonstrated between the degree of apoptotic cell death and the subsequent outcome of treatment. Therefore, techniques for detecting apoptosis in tumors, following therapy, are likely to have important applications in drug development and in the clinic. We have described here magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy experiments that have demonstrated their potential for detecting apoptotic tumor cells non-invasively in vivo.
