摘要

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) cause serious acute illness and long term sequelae. STEC can cause diarrhea, diarrhea-associated hemorrhagic colitis (HC), hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TPP) through the production of Shiga toxins (5). Estimated annual costs of STEC O157:H7 and non-0157 STEC were 700 million dollar and 300 million dollar (US) (1). Prominent ancillary virulence factors elaborated by STEC include intimin and enterohemolysin. The goal of this study was to characterize E. coli isolates, mostly from farm animals including mastitis cases and companion animals, for virulence factors associated with STEC.
