Bedding has a direct effect on udder health. More importantly, the health of the udder directly affects the quality of dairy products, which are consumed by millions of people daily. Thus, it is important not to underestimate the importance of clean and bacteria free bedding. Bacterial populations found on teat ends closely reflect those found in bedding material. Bedding material that is improperly managed can increase the probability of environmental pathogen associated mastitis or elevated SCC well into or through lactation. It is important to understand some basic differences regarding sand and organic bedding in terms of where the bacteria are located. Once this is understood better bedding management will be possible. The objective of this study is to spray inoculate various depths of bedding material with Klebsiella pnuemoniae, wait up to 2 hours then sample the top an bottom of the inoculated material.
