An important goal of the pre-milking teat preparation routine is to reduce the level of soil and microbial contamination on teat skin with the aim to reduce the risk of infection of the mammary gland, and to also minimize the number of bacteria in themilk tank. Therefore, a pre-milking product should also have good cleaning properties. On the other hand, barrier type post-milking teat disinfectants protect the cow for an extended period of time after dipping. The addition of dye to a product can bean effective tool to monitor milker compliance with the milking routine, although levels of inclusion vary depending on market preferences. This trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy of two pre-milking teat cleaners in their ability to clean teatsdipped with an lactic acid based barrier product over a one week period.
