Cleaning Efficacy of Two Pre-milking Teat Disinfectants When Using a Barrier Lactic Acid Based Post-milking Teat Disinfectant

The main goal of pre-milking teat sanitization is to reduce the level of microbial contamination on teat skin with the aim to reduce the risk of infection of the mammary gland, and to minimize the number of bacteria in the milk tank. Disinfection of teat skin after milking will help reduce the chance of the spread of mastitis pathogens by stopping them from entering and colonizing the mammary gland. Apart from proven germicidal activity, pre-milking teat disinfectants should have good cleaning properties. Post-milking barrier teat disinfectants should have persistent and effective germicidal properties, and also help maintain teats in good skin condition. Color is also an important component in a teat disinfectant formulation as it can be an effective tool to monitor milker compliance with the milking routine. This trial was designed to observe the persistence of a barrier post-milking teat disinfectant on teats, and to evaluate the efficacy of two pre-milking teat disinfectants in their ability to clean teats dipped with the barrier product over a one week period.
