There is a need for a rapid and precise method for identifying pathogens on-farm for either clinical or subclinical mastitis control programs. Petrifilm plates (3M Microbiology) may fill this gap. Petrifilm plates are ready-to-use culture media. In mild to moderate cases of mastitis, waiting for culture results before beginning treatment can significantly reduce antibiotic use (2). Reducing antibiotics will help prevent unnecessary milk discard, reduce the risk of antibiotic residues in milk, and improve the success of treatments due to targeted therapy (1).
