The last 40 - 50 years have seen a revolution in human food production: the rise of aquaculture. Although relatively simple forms of aquatic production have been practiced for a very long time, significant developments in knowledge of fish reproduction and husbandry coupled to the development of compound aquafeeds have catalysed a rapid expansion in intensive aquaculture. Aquaculture now provides a very significant proportion of the world's seafood supply and, indeed, a substantial share of the population's protein intake. As a consequence of its development in the mass media age, where the opinions of genuine scientists and government agencies are often criticised by anti-aquaculture pressure groups, the industry has evolved under intense public scrutiny.
