The air temperature and relative humidity on the thermal effect of plants was monitored on a College campus in suburban Chicago, IL. The climatic impact of plants were observed in a region about 300' by 300' (100 by 100 m) in size during nine consecutive days in summer 2002. Five sets of readings were taken every hour each day at six points using Hobo data loggers. Two points were on the west side of the building, one on the east side, two in the parking lot and one in an indoor office space. The vegetation around the building consisted of tall deciduous trees and short shrubs with flowers and grass between them. There was a sidewalk that connected the building to the rest of the campus via a bridge over a river creek. The highest temperatures were recorded within the parking lot, reflecting the effect of vehicular traffic. At midday the temperatures in the parking areas was about 15-17°F (8-9°C) above the average temperature in the wooded area at a distance of 300' (100m). Near the park at a distance of 100' (30m), the temperatures were only slightly above those in the park.
