In July 2002, JR central inaugurated the test facilities in Komaki City, Aichi, Japan. One of the facilities is the low-noise wind tunnel to develop high-speed Shinkansen trains. In Japan, environmental problem is strictly regulated because of the high population. The Komaki wind tunnel is built to develop low-noise high-speed train sets of next generation. Its background noise is reduced as low as 78 dB (A) by the use of the side stream. Also, to detect the aerodynamic noise source of model under test, we introduced noise source location system. The system is based on conventional phased array system, but we used random placed microphones to reduce ghost and achieve high frequency response. The maximum frequency is 20kHz, which is world's best performance system ever introduced. In this paper, we describe the performance of Komaki wind tunnel, side stream effect and some test results of noise source location system.
