Modeling of Sound Fields Considering the Acoustical Characteristics of Korean Traditional Musical Instruments

The present study aims to investigate the acoustical characteristics of typical Korean traditional musical instruments and to analyze the acoustic performance of concert halls for Korean traditional music. First, far-field acoustical characteristics of several typical Korean traditional instruments and singing were measured in a semi-anechoic chamber. Three instruments and one female singer which are essential in performing the Korean traditional music were of concern: Gayageum (string), Daegeum (woodwind), Jango (percussion; drum), and Pansori (song). Sound radiation pattern from each source was measured by array microphones which were distributed every 10° degree of vertical and horizontal plane to the center of source. A 3-D imaged model of a Korean Traditional concert hall was used for the computer modeling. Computations were carried out based on the directional and spectral characteristics of the measured sources. The room model was numerically tested to find the difference of acoustic measures depending on the musical sources. Acoustic parameters including RT30, SPL, C80, LF, STI, were calculated at each receiver position. The results show that each source has its distinct directional frequency characteristics and there are significant differences in the acoustic measures in a receiver position between the use of omni-directional source and the musical instruments investigated. A guideline for the acoustic design of halls for performing the Korean traditional music was suggested which could be used as a basic reference in the future designs.
