The spatial distribution of the density of excited atoms in plasmas is affected by reabsorption and trapping of radiation. The description of the corresponding processes requires the solution of the radiation transport equation (Holstein-Biberman equation). The recently revised solution approach of this equation, the so-called matrix method, has been extended to (i) the case of low absorption coefficients, i.e., reabsorption of radiation, and (ii) the trapping of the resonance radiation in the case of a nonuniform distribution of the atoms in the ground state. Results for typical one-dimensional geometries and shapes of the emission line profile are presented and discussed.
