The paper describes a process which combines a municipal solid waste incinerator and a coal fired power plant by integrating their steam circuits and feeding the pre-cleaned flue gas of the waste incinerator for final cleaning into the primary air supply of the power plant. The coal combustion cares for the destruction of PCDD/F and the SO2 from waste incineration is removed in the SO2 scrubber of the power plant. A comparison with co-combustion and a theoretical consideration of the fate of waste born pollutants indicates that the UPSWING concept guarantees a minimum transfer of pollutants into the power plant and looks economically attractive. Experimental results document the total destruction of PCDD/F in the power plant.
