The emergence of optical broadband services is intimately tied to the evolution of service delivery models - from Private Networks, to managed services, to hosted services. There are strong business drivers for an enterprise to move to hosted services while keeping a degree of visibility and control over services and resources. Indeed, even with hosted services, enterprises will want to continue to do a level of planning, engineering, and maintenance that fits their business objectives. Furthermore, customer visibility and control are a competitive differentiator for service providers that also allows them to contain operational expenditures. Without doubt, customer visibility and control has all the ingredients of a win-win proposal. Customer visibility and control capabilities will fit the existing network architecture. Existing interfaces between the customer and the service provider will be gradually extended to fulfill more and more of the requirements. User-to-network interfaces (UNI) will be developed to give users direct visibility and control over connectivity services. Internal to the service provider, the customer visibility and control application will remain firmly anchored within the management system. This will be complemented with the ability to tag connections and resources with customer names in the network. Standard interfaces, such as TMF814, will be enhanced to give the CV&C application access to all of the required information - including multi-vendor and multi-layer from the network. We can hope that in the future, with the right architecture to support it, customer visibility and control services will be offered in a variety of capability sets to fit a variety of customer market segments.
