Clean Energy from Coal Emission-Free Power Generation with Options for CO_2 Sequestration

The availability of clean, cheap and copious energy will allow the World community to sustain its economic growth and improve living standards for all. Fossil fuels, particularly coal, plays a very important role in providing low-cost energy, but it also causes environmental problems due to emissions of combustion products into the atmosphere. In this paper we examine the new technologies that would make coal a clean and cheap source of energy that can be sustained for at least one century into the future. We examine various alternatives for converting the energy of coal to other but cleaner forms, such as hydrogen. We discuss uses or disposal of process byproducts without adverse environmental impact. We also present the potential impact of these developments on the global mining industry.
