This paper describes a new approach for recovery of sill coal pillars which has been formed during exploitation of very steep coal layers with a kind of cut and fill method named Gazangui, in Babnizu Coal Mines at Kerman Province in south east of Iran. Mine is gassy one with high potential of spontaneous combustion and it is very difficult to mechanize mining operations because of geological conditions. During exploitation of coal from cut and fill stope, some pillars polygonal in shape have been abandoned for protection of main level drifts that each contain approximately 1200- 6000 tonne of coal. Using this new method more than 50% of abandoned coal has been recovered from the above mentioned pillars and the activity is in progress now. Dilution of coal because of rock material caving from side walls is a very considerable problem. Recovery has been done by driving one stone gazangue driven in the footwall that separate in two branches inside the pillar (east-west) and coal is excavating with permissible explosive.
