The paper presents a theoretical analysis of the ideal ramjet cycle over a wide range of flight Mach numbers, from conventional supersonic speeds to the hypersonic regime, which may be applicable to future aerospace planes and launch vehicles. The main significance of the study is in revealing the performance envelope of this airbreathing propulsion means and in providing good insight on the influencing operating parameters. Those include fuel combustion energy, fuel-to-air ratio, and gas properties. Of particular practical interest is the discussion showing that the ideal peak specific impulse is proportional to the heat of combustion, while the specific thrust is related to the specific heat-capacity.
