Experimental Study on Flow and Tidal Exchange of a Reservoir through Dike Gates in Isahaya Bay

The flow and tidal exchange of the reservoir by opening the floodgates of the dike constructed in Isahaya Bay were studied by experiments conducted using a distorted-scale model of the simplified bay. Water level response at several points inside the reservoir, and the flow velocity near the gates were measured. The tidal exchange of the reservoir was evaluated by a remnant function defined by the ratio of the number of remaining tracer particles in the reservoir to the initial number of particles, which had been obtained from video images taken above the model basin. The results of corresponding numerical simulations were compared with the experiments.
