Further Deepening Of The Mae Moh Lignite Mining Operation / Thailand--A Consulting Study

The further deepening of existing opencast mining operations is common practice due to the fact that excavation methods and techniques are becoming more and more efficient and therefore deposits with stripping ratios that were once ago considered unfavourable can now be mined economically. However there are still limitations as to the technical possibilities of advancing to certain depths because of mostly geotechnical and hydrological considerations. For the Mae Moh mine in Thailand, a lignite mine working on a current level of 260m, a further deepening to a total depth of 450m is planned and, eventually, even a final depth of 600 m is considered. This paper provides a summary of the technical study produced by RE GmbH on behalf of EGAT.
