During the mining activity, major failure occurred in lowwall side of this pit. The dimension of the failure covered almost three blocks, which was from Block 28 to Block 30. The main haulage road which was located on the top of this lowwall also suffered failure. The road was being used as way for hauling the coal from northern mine site to the stock pile area in Muara Port. In order to avoid the halt of the mining activity due to this failure, the new hauling road diversion was constructed. The new road diversion was just located near to the old one on top of the lowwall. So it is important that a geotechnical study has to be conducted to guarantee the stability of the lowwall. The investigation result reveals that this plane failure was triggered by fault appered on top of the lowwall and slipped along the bedding plane. The slope stability analysis was carried out by back analysis to obtain the property of sliding material. The result then was used for analyzing the design of new lowwall slope, considering the load due to coal transportation road above.
