Cable shovel and hydraulic excavator characteristics and selection criteria

This paper explores the equipment characteristics and application criteria typically examined during selection of an excavating tool for a surface mining operation. This paper focuses exclusively on two types of loading tool: Electric Mining Shovels (EMS, also known as Cable Shovels or Rope Shovels) and Hydraulic Mining Shovels (HMS). General equipment characteristics as well as geological and application specific considerations and commercial issues are examined.
