To provide a safer and cost effective solution, a new concept of storing LNG in a lined rock cavern with containment system had been developed by Geostock, SKEC and SN Technigaz with the help of KIGAM(Amantini et al. 2004, Chung et al. 2004). To demonstrate the feasibility of this concept and to validate the numerical models, a cryogenic pilot cavern hadbeen designed, constructed and operated at KIGAM in the Daejeon Science Complex. This paper describes the results of the numerical modeling performed to investigate the impact of ice ring formation and propagation on the ground water flow, where the ice ring is created by the change of groundwater due to the cooling-down in the rock mass around the cavern.
