24 patients with stenosed internal carotid artery were investigated before and after carotid endarterectomy. The patients were considered eligible for CEA if their neurological symptoms had completely abated or caused only minor disability (scoring 1-2 on the Rankin scale). TCD was employed for the measurement of BFV, and median nerve SEPs for assessing cortical reactivity of the central region of the brain.A hyper-capnia of 7% CO2 proved reliably preserved vascular reactivity. However, there was no increase in SEPs: the patient's brain reactivity was sufficient even without artificial vasodilatation.
