Environmental Risk Assessment of a Containment Disposal Facility at a Contaminated Site

Approaches to an environmental risk assessment are applied to a contaminated site, where a containment disposal facility (CDF) is constructed as a remedial countermeasure through the combined use of a vertical cut-off wall and the capping system. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the CDF in terms of a reduction in human health risks. Dioxins and polychlori-nated biphenyls (PCBs) are the contaminants of concern. The transport and the exposure of these contaminants through the surrounding media (e.g. the atmosphere and the groundwater) with or without the CDF, are estimated using numerical and analytical methods. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the remedial action is quantified by comparing the calculated human health risks. The analytical results indicate that the CDF was able to significantly reduce the potential human health risks to an acceptable level.
