Taiwan suffered from the devastating Ji-ji earthquake on 21 September 1999. Ground rupture as a result of the earthquake extended through one dam site and minute cracks observed on a numbers of dams. A detailed earthquake-resistant assessment of these dams was thus required Conventional pseudostatic stability method and sophisticated numerical analyses were adopted in the assessment of an earth rockfill dam located just 48 km from the Ji-ji earthquake epicenter. Both methods have been proved to be capable in predicting the earthquake magnitude that would cause the dam to fail. Numerical analysis was seen to be more superior than the pseudostatic method but the results were often difficult to be interpreted.
