Field Performance of Highway Embankments Constructed on Soft Clay Improved by Band Drains

Normal and large discharge plastic band drains were used to treat soft clay foundation along the Fu-Xia Expressway in Fu-jian, China. The field performance of the soft soil improved by these drains is presented in this paper. Total settlements at the embankment center and shoulder, lateral movements at the embankment toes and pore water pressures at different depths beneath the centre were measured. The drains were effective in accelerating the consolidation settlement. The settlements at embankment shoulders were about 52 to 64 percent of those at embankment center. Calculated settlements by conventional methods agreed well with long-term settlements extrapolated using the hyperbolic method based on field monitoring data. There were no noticeable differences in the performance of these two types of band drains adopted in this study.
