The Korea has seldom experienced the tunnelling in karst. This paper outlines the new approach of tunnel design in karst formation that was adopted in the part of the railway project in Korea. For the longest tunnel in the project area, karst features and the expected scenarios in the tunnel area, were developed based on the results of the geological and geotechnical assessment. In order to provide specific support measures and construction details for a wide range of possible karst features, the generalised typical karst types have been developed. According to the classification of karst features, the construction sequence and initial support systems for each karst feature are also suggested in this paper.
