Computer modeling of bridge aeroelastic issues using FEM and moving grids

The current status of computational bridge aerodynamics is briefly reviewed. A detailed discussion of the challenges involved in applying numerical procedures to model the fluid-structure interaction using a moving grid is presented. The UABRIM program is further verified for bridge aerodynamics study. Four bridge cross sections are considered for study. The computed critical velocity for flutter is compared with available computed and wind tunnel measurements. Once an effective grid is generated for a bridge cross section, the UABRIM can compute the critical velocity for flutter in two weeks in a personal computer environment. To apply the program for complex bridge cross section an unstructured grid solver was developed and computed solutions are reported.
