This paper presents wind-tunnel experiment of a viscoelastically damped building frame. A series of wind-tunnel tests were performed in a boundary layer wind tunnel, under careful control of temperature, to investigate the effectiveness of viscoelastic dampers in attenuating the wind-induced dynamic response. Viscoelastic dampers with two damping levels were designed and added to a full aeroelastic building model. Assuming a hurricane lasts for 1 hour, temperature rise within the viscoelastic damper due to the repeated cycles is considered in the viscoelastic damper design. The effect of angle of wind attack on the dynamic response was investigated. Damper placement tests were also conducted for efficient use of dampers. It is interesting to note that the dampers were not as effective in damping energy at the vortex-shedding frequency as for other mode frequencies. Vortex-induced vibration may not important compared with mode vibrations, except for a resonant frequency.
