Coriolis mass flowmeters have been used for the last two decades in many different applications. Mass flow is measured directly with very high accuracy. The instruments are real multivariable meters, because all meters also include a temperature measurement and a direct density measurement, from which even further variables can be derived (e.g. concentration measurement based on density). The trend in industry shows an increased use of these functions, due to increased global competition and thus the need for better process efficiency as well as stricter quality requirements making multivariable measurement and control more important than ever. Improving quality and process enables manufacturer to save costs in better production time and less wasted material. Now, direct viscosity measurement was successfully integrated into the Promass 83 I coriolis meter, as an additional variable to mass flow, density and temperature. Viscosity is a crucial process variable indicating important fluid properties like concentration, consistency, pourability, which defines the quality of a product. It can also be an important control variable that can indicate problems in a process. In-line measurement of viscosity in the process helps manufacturers to adjust the process immediately and to prevent a whole batch to be wasted. No time is lost for laboratory viscosity measurement. This paper explains the principle of operation of the additional viscosity measurement and demonstrates the opportunities of the new feature.
