ASSESSMENT METHOD FOR THE RESULTS OF RADAR AND ARPA SIMULATOR TRAINING

In STCW Convention (1978), the radar simulator training had become an acceptable and routine process in many maritime training institutes. In STCW revised Convention (1995), the performance standards of Radar and ARPA were specified, and the simulator training objectives, training procedures and assessment procedures were recommended. Recently, many maritime training institutes/universities in the world are using some kinds of simulators for maritime education and training (MET) especially ARPA-Radar, GMDSS, Ship handling, Cargo handling and Tanker simulator. By using the above mentioned simulators for MET, the instructor should not only consider the capabilities of simulator facility but also take into account the ability to assess the results of training. Now many manufacturers can produce their simulators that are according to the criteria of above standards, but every simulator completely can not be satisfied with their specifications. Above all, it could be hard for instructors to assess the training results and to make a scenario. The most important things with using those simulators are that the trainee has the precise information about the results of their training and makes a challenge to overcome his misunderstandings and faults. There are two methods to assess or evaluate the results of MET training. One is to find out the optimum situation with which is compared the training result. Another is to give weighted points according to trainee's offense and grade by deducting marks. In many maritime institutes, various types of checklist are used to the precise information about the results of training on the debriefing time, but it is trouble to mark a considerable number of check items. Ultimately it is worried about that the important items are forgotten.
