Benzoxazinones (Bxs) are defensive compounds found in gramineous plants. Five Bx biosynthetic genes, TaBxl-TaBx5, were isolated from hexaploid wheat, and the TaBx loci were assigned to the homoeologous group-4 and group-5 chromosomes. The TaBx genes were found to be present also in rye and diploid ancestors of wheats, Triticum monococcum, Aegilops speltoides, and Ae. squarrosa. However, in badey no Southern band was detected with any of the TaBx probes, indicating that the absence of Bxs in bariey is attributable to the total elimination of Bx biosynthetic genes.
