At present, limited information is available as to the genetic diversity in cultivated durum wheat. A collection of 134 durum wheat accessions, mainly comprising modem varieties and a number of founders, was profiled with 70 dinucleotide SSRs well-distributed across all chromosomes. Cluster analysis pointed out that the genetic diversity of these accessions is highly stmctured in a number of groups and subgroups mostly in agreement with pedigree information. Ranking of genetic similarities and probabilities of ancestry were used to identify the most probable parents and the closest relatives of each cv. The results obtained considering some examples of triplets (i.e., one cv. and both its putative parents) are discussed.
