Whole genome based marker assisted selection strategies in wheat breeding

In recent times, utilisation of molecular markers in wheat breeding programmes has become common practice. Marker assisted selection has been used in many different applications including; enrichment of allele frequencies in early generation segregating populations (BCiFi, TCiFi, or F2), tracking donor parent alleles during backcrossing, screening fixed lines for traits of low heritability, assistance in the management of pure seed multiplication, identifying parents or selecting for recurrent parentloci during backcrossing. The advent of high throughput marker systems such as DArT, SNPs, and to some extent SSRs, together with improved characterisation of trait-marker associations, has allowed more innovative breeding strategies to be considered. This paper discusses the impact of these recent advances on the role that markers are playing in Australian wheat breeding. As an example, a practical breeding strategy integrating trait and whole genome based selection together with other fast tracking breeding strategies is described.
