Gametocidal chromosomes derived from certain species of the genus Aegilops are known to induce chromosomal breaks in common wheat. They also cause breakage in alien chromosomes in common wheat. Wheat stocks carrying chromosomal segments of barley andrye chromosomes, including a rye B chromosome, have been produced using three of the gametocidal chromosomes. Some structural changes of the alien chromosomes were observed in 10.6% to 18.5%, on average, of the progeny of common wheat lines with a pair of alien chromosomes and one gametocidal chromosome. The breakpoints of barley chromosome 7H were studied by chromosome banding and in situ hybridization and were found to be located all along the chromosome, with a substantial concentration in the centromeric region.
